Have Your Say: Proposed New Community Garden/Food Hub for Armidale
We are exploring the creation of a new community garden and food hub. This initiative aims to create a shared green space where community members can grow fresh produce, learn about sustainable practices, and foster social connections. The garden will support food security, environmental stewardship, and community wellbeing, and is designed to complement existing gardens in Armidale.
Why a Community Garden/Food Hub?
- Environmental Sustainability: Community gardens contribute to urban greening, biodiversity, and reduction of urban heat islands. Composting practices help reduce waste and enrich soil.
- Health & Wellness: Gardening improves physical and mental health, and increases access to fresh, nutritious food.
- Social Cohesion: Gardens serve as hubs for community engagement, education, and social interaction.
- Economic Benefits: They provide affordable produce, stimulate local economies, and can increase property values.
How Will It Work?
- Location: The recommended site is 253 Donnelly St, Armidale, chosen for its suitability, accessibility, and available infrastructure.
- Setup: The site will be prepared with raised beds, composting areas, water access, signage, and basic infrastructure. These are some examples, however the final design will be largely influenced by community feedback.
- Governance: A garden committee or cooperative will oversee operations, inviting residents, schools, and local groups to participate.
- Operations: Regular working bees, workshops, and seasonal planting days can be included in the strcuture of the garden. Organic and regenerative practices will be encouraged.
- Education: Workshops and curriculum-linked activities for schools can be hosted, with signage and QR codes for plant info and garden stories.
- Funding: Grants, council support, sponsorships, and donations will be sought. Social enterprise models may be explored.
