Armidale Regional Council is seeking community feedback on its Draft Drought Management Plan.

The plan provides a clear framework for how Council will prepare for, respond to, and recover from drought conditions affecting the Armidale and Guyra water supplies. It outlines the actions Council may take to manage water resources, maintain safe drinking water, and extend available water supplies for as long as possible during drought.

The Draft Drought Management Plan aims to:

  • Support Council staff in making informed decisions during drought events.
  • Protect water security for residents and businesses.
  • Maintain drinking water quality in line with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
  • Inform the community about drought risks and the important role residents play in conserving water.
  • Guide drought preparedness, response, and recovery activities.

The plan also serves as an operational and resource planning tool, providing Council with an approved and consistent approach to drought management. It supports community awareness initiatives and may assist Council in securing future government funding for water security projects.

Developed in line with NSW Government best-practice requirements, the plan adopts the Prevention, Preparation, Response and Recovery (PPRR) approach to reduce risks to the community and the environment before, during, and after drought events.

Council's General Manager, in consultation with Council, is authorised under the plan to declare drought conditions and implement the appropriate management actions when required.

Council encourages residents, businesses and stakeholders to review the Draft Drought Management Plan and provide feedback during the public exhibition period. Together, we can help strengthen our region's resilience to future droughts.

Submissions must be received by Thursday, 13 October 2026.
