Why is the Armidale region participating in the automated vehicle trial?
Armidale has been named as one of two regional cities (Coffs Harbour will conduct the other trial) to be included in the NSW Government trial of automated vehicle technology.
Council submitted a bid to host the trial, which is an exciting step in Armidale's status as a smart, technologically-advanced and progressive city.
Armidale Regional Council is collaborating with Transport for NSW and program partners Easy Mile, Transdev, The University of New England (UNE), WSP, QBE and Edwards Buses to trial the technology outside of a metropolitan location.
What is an autonomous vehicle?
An autonomous vehicle can guide itself without a human driver, using radars, lasers, cameras, global positioning systems and other technology to navigate itself.
They can come in many forms, such as cars and buses. ARDi is a shuttle bus with a capacity of up to 14 people.
What provisions are in place to protect public safety during the trial?
