What is Active Transport?

Active transport refers to the use of physical activity, such as walking, cycling, and/or mobility scooter as a mode of transportation. It involves the promotion and design of infrastructure that supports and encourages active modes of transport, such as footpaths, bike lanes, and shared-use paths. The goal of active transport in cities is to reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, decrease traffic congestion and air pollution, improve public health outcomes, and enhance the livability of urban areas.

Project Background

The Active Transport Strategy will incorporate Armidale, Guyra and its surrounding villages. This strategy will give Council a strategic direction moving forward for investment in infrastructure that promotes Active Transport within the community, including a prioritised list of improvements for the pedestrian and cycling network. Some of the exciting objectives of the strategy include:
🚲 Improve the level of pedestrian access and priority, particularly in areas of high pedestrian concentrations
🚲 Improve the level of personal mobility and safety for seniors and people with disabilities
🚲 Enable vibrant centres and liveable neighbourhoods through the creation of street environments that prioritise walking and cycling
🚲 Establish a vision for cycling and walking in the whole Armidale LGA for the next 10 years
🚲
Review new trends in the active transport space, such as e-bikes and e-scooters.
